University of Queensland Research Reveals Why Stenosis Patients Who Follow Every Instruction Still Get Worse — and the 20-Minute Solution Surgeons Are Now Testing on Their Own Patients

July 30th, 2026 | Written By Dr. Yasseen Wajid, Orthopaedic Surgeon.

My patient Eline had been referred to me for surgery.

Sixty-seven. Retired schoolteacher. Eighteen months since her diagnosis.

She'd done the physiotherapy. Twelve weeks. Properly.

She got worse.

She'd had the injections.

The first one gave her six weeks.

The second gave her three.

Third did nothing.

She'd tried the TENS unit. It buzzed. It's in a drawer.

She can't walk to the shop at the end of her road anymore.

The one she'd walked to every day for eleven years.

She leaves the trolley with her husband in the queue because if she stops walking, her legs go.

She's mapped every bench on every route she takes.

Then she said:

"I've done everything you people have told me to do. And I'm worse."

I didn't have an answer.

If your legs go heavy and numb after a hundred yards…

If standing in the queue hurts more than walking the whole shop…

If leaning on the trolley is the only thing that gives you relief…

What you're about to read explains why — and what to do about it.

My name is Dr. Yasseen Wajid.

Orthopaedic surgeon.

Over a thousand procedures.

Until two years ago, I would have told Eline what every other surgeon says:

"Some people just don't respond."

I believed that. I was wrong.

But first — let me tell you what I found when I went looking for the answer she deserved.

THE DISCOVERY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

After Eline left, I pulled every study on exercise outcomes in lumbar stenosis.

Then I pulled my own surgical records.

Patient after patient. Decompression.

Good technique. Canal widened.

Six months later, some of them were back in my office with the same symptoms.

The ones with the most wasted muscle around the spine got the least out of the surgery.

Then I found Professor Paul Hodges. University of Queensland. 194 studies.

What he'd documented explained everything...

THE REAL REASON NOTHING HAS WORKED

Your spine has a tunnel.

Your leg nerves pass through it.

Yours has narrowed. You know this.

But the tunnel is not a fixed size.

It changes with position.

Arch your back — tunnel closes. Lean forward — it opens.

So what's controlling your position all day?

Small but one of the most important muscle called the multifidus.

Wrapped around your spine.

Its only job: hold each vertebra where the tunnel stays open.

When it's on: tunnel open, legs work. You never knew it was there.

When it's off: vertebra sags, tunnel closes, legs go heavy at a hundred yards.

Here's the problem.

In stenosis, the nerve is always irritated.

Irritated nerves shut down the closest muscle.

Same reason you limp on a bad ankle.

But a limp stops when the ankle heals.

This doesn't.

The body switches it off. It stays off.

And it explains everything.

Why the exercises make you worse.

Why the injections wear off faster.

Why the distance keeps shrinking.

Why standing is worse than walking.

Why the trolley helps.

But here's the part that will make you angry…

WHY EVERYTHING FAILED..

Nothing you've been given could have stopped it.

Physio asked the muscle to work — it was off.

Injections calmed the inflammation. The muscle kept wasting underneath.

Painkillers changed what you feel. Can't make a muscle contract.

Brace did the muscle's job — so the muscle fired less.

Surgery widened the tunnel. Nobody woke the muscle holding it open.

Not one of them could make the multifidus contract.

And while you've been trying all of that, MRI studies show it turning to fat.

So here's why this matters right now…

In Northern Ireland, waits have passed 155 weeks.

The patients who go into surgery with the most wasted multifidus get the least out of it.

The waiting isn't neutral.

Day by day, the more multifidus wastes, the more pain you feel.

So the real question becomes…

CAN THE MUSCLE BE REACHED AT ALL?

You can't strengthen a muscle that's off.

You can't stretch it on.

You can't massage it on.

You can't wish it on.

There is only one way to make a dormant muscle contract.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation.  NMES.

A direct signal sent to the muscle that forces it to fire — whether it wants to or not.

No instruction.

No voluntary effort.

The signal arrives, the muscle contracts.

That's it.

This isn't new.

Surgeons have been implanting neurostimulators for years.

They work.

They wake dormant muscles in spinal patients with documented results.

The problem?

An implant means surgery.

General anaesthetic.

£20,000 privately.

And another waiting list on top of yours.

But the principle is proven.

NMES reaches muscles that nothing else can.

Now — this is important — NMES is not TENS.

TENS is the device in your drawer.

It sends a low-level buzz across the surface of your skin.

It was designed to block pain signals.

It has no mechanism to make a muscle contract.

It doesn't reach deep tissue.

It doesn't produce a contraction.

It was never built to do what I'm describing.

TENS masks sensation. NMES produces contraction.

The fact that they both use pads is where the similarity ends.

The REAL question I kept asking: could you deliver NMES from the outside — at home — without the implant?

I partnered with a team of biomedical engineers to find out.

Eighteen months of development.

Tested on my own patients.

Refined until it did one thing reliably: make the multifidus contract from outside the body.

Let me tell you what happened when I gave it to Eline…

Twenty minutes a day. Tracked walking distance and standing time before pain kicked in.

Week one — tension eased. Stood longer at the cooker.

Week two — good day, bad day. She rang. I told her to keep going.

Week three — she stopped ringing.

Week five — she rang again. Crying.

She'd walked to the shop. The one she'd given up on eleven months ago.

There. Home. Didn't stop.

"I walked past the bench, Yasseen. I didn't even think about it."

Six more patients that month. Then ten. Then forty to 148!

Not all responded the same. Some took longer.

Not one said it did nothing.

Not one went back to the exercises.

And that's when I knew this needed to reach more than just my patients…

INTRODUCING THE LUMERA DEEP MUSCLE ACTIVATOR

The only consumer device that reaches the multifidus from outside the body.

For the person who's tried everything and doesn't have the energy to try something difficult.

Lie down. Pad on. Press start. Twenty minutes.

It makes the muscle fire. You feel the contraction. You see it.

The TENS unit in your drawer buzzes on the skin.

Blocks pain signals. Can't make a muscle contract.

This is a different category.

But here's why I built it the way I did…

THE ADAPTIVE CORRECTION PROTOCOL

A dormant muscle doesn't need the same signal on day one as day thirty.

10 rhythms — variation stops the muscle adapting to one pattern and switching off again.

29 levels — fine control. What you need in week one and week six are different.

Wireless remote — you control it. No reaching. No asking for help.

20 minutes. Muscle works. You don't.

WHAT YOU'VE ALREADY SPENT ON THINGS THAT NEVER REACHED THE MUSCLE

Physiotherapy, 12 sessions — £480–£840

Chiropractic, six months — £2,000–£3,800

Injections, private — £300–£800 each

Devices, braces, TENS — £200–£600

Medication — monthly, indefinitely

Thousands. Still switched off.

The Lumera Deep Muscle Activator retails at £197.

That's already less than three private physio sessions.

For the only device that reaches the muscle those sessions never could.

But I went back to the engineering team and told them something.

Most of my patients have already spent thousands on treatments that never reached the muscle.

Asking them for another £197 — even when it's the right device — felt wrong.

So we worked out a way to offer it directly at £77.

No middlemen. No retail markup.

Straight from us to you.

£77. For the only consumer NMES device built to reach the multifidus.

MY 90-DAY GUARANTEE

Look, I know You've been burned before.

Things in drawers.

Use it every day for 365 days.

Track your distance.

Walking further? Keep it.

Not? Send it back. Full refund.

I set it at 365 because I'm confident in what it can do for you.

Imagine walking to the shop and back without checking where the benches are.

Imagine standing in the queue with your husband instead of leaving him with the trolley.

Make it through the whole day on one plan — not three rest stops, two paracetamol, and a lie-down by 2pm.

THE CHOICE IN FRONT OF YOU

Two months ago Eline couldn't walk to the shop without mapping every bench.

Today she walks there and back. No stopping. No planning.

She stopped trying to strengthen a muscle that was off.

She started waking it up.

You can keep doing exercises that feed the muscles closing the tunnel.

Keep waiting for injections that wear off faster.

Keep planning every walk around where to sit.

Or you can do what Eline did.

£77. 365 Days against your own walking distance.

Not a cure but help.

That's what this is.

Has anyone with actual stenosis tried this? Not just "back pain" — I mean proper spinal stenosis with the leg symptoms. I've been burnt before with these Facebook things.

Margaret yes. L4-L5 stenosis, diagnosed 2022. I was very skeptical. But I'm 8 weeks in and I stood in the queue at Tesco last Tuesday for the first time in two years without having to walk away. Not saying it's a miracle but something has definitely changed.

Brian that's exactly my symptom — the queues. How long before you noticed anything? I can barely do 5 minutes standing.

First two weeks honestly nothing. I nearly sent it back. Week 4 something shifted. My wife noticed before I did — she said I'd stopped gripping the kitchen counter when I was making tea. Give it the full time.

How is this different from a TENS machine? I've got one from Boots sitting in a drawer doing absolutely nothing.

Sandra completely different. TENS just buzzes on the skin — blocks the pain signal for a bit then it wears off. This one you can actually feel the muscle underneath tightening. Like a proper contraction not a tingle. I had a TENS for 3 years and it did nothing. This isn't the same thing at all.

Sandra I had the exact same thought. My TENS is in the bedside drawer. This is genuinely different — the sensation is deeper. It's hard to explain until you feel it but it's not a surface buzz.

£77 for something off Facebook. My wife will kill me 😂

Derek that's what I said. We're on a pension. But I worked out I'd spent over £600 on physio in the last year and my walking was still getting worse. £77 felt like nothing compared to that. And the guarantee is 365 days — if it doesn't work you send it back. I had to show my husband the guarantee before he'd let me order 😂

I'm 73. Is there an age where this just won't work? Feels like everything else has stopped working for me.

Dorothy I'm 74! Was thinking the exact same thing. But the muscle responds to the electrical signal regardless of age — it's not asking your body to do anything, it does it for you. I'm 8 weeks in and I walked to the chemist and back without stopping for the first time in ages. Never too old for an electrical signal love.

I need to be honest — I nearly closed this page three times. I've been burned by Facebook health ads before. But I checked the PubMed study they linked and it's real. And the 365 day guarantee is what got me over the line. Any company doing 365 days has to actually believe this works or they'd go broke on returns. 10 weeks in now and I'm walking distances I haven't managed since 2023.

Fiona same here. I actually printed the study and showed it to my consultant. He hadn't heard of the device specifically but said NMES is well established in rehabilitation and he couldn't see a reason not to try it. 8 weeks later my walking went from about 100 metres to over 300. He wrote it down.

Just tagging my mum @Anne Lawson — this is what we were talking about after your appointment last week. Read the whole article. The bit about the muscle switching off is exactly what the physio was trying to explain. The guarantee is a full year so nothing to lose. x

Christine just read it all. Ordering it now. If Maureen at 74 can do it so can I. Will let you know how it goes love. xx

Engineer here. Retired but I needed data not testimonials. Day one: 140 metres before left leg went heavy. Been tracking every three days. Week four: 210m. Week seven: 310m. Yesterday: 380m. That's not placebo. That's a line on a graph going one direction for seven weeks. Do what you want with that information.
